Excruciating FRIM run!

FRIM
Runners in Malaysia, particularly the ones from around KL/Selangor would be familiar with FRIM (Forest Research of Malaysia)...a 'runners haven!' I was told.

So off we went with my loving still-deciding-about-running-if-its fashionable-enough wife and my 60 year-plus-yet-terribly-active parents to Selayang on a lovely Sunday morn, where FRIM is situated.

Well kept clean streets

The gate at the entrance was impressive, as was the RM8 collected as the entrance fee for our car to go through, no wonder a lot of cars were parked outside along the road resembling a Fridays pasar malam. All throughout were beautifully planted trees and there is even a school inside (no wonder some cars went through without paying, now it made sense, the dudes were staying in there). Its no forest in here, more like a well preserved garden, with lots of well kept flowering plants and fountains. or perhaps the trees are some where else..

Wife came too!

Brisk walking around the tree lined tar paved roads, we finally found a trail (for Hikers, the sign read) and off the four of us went, this being our first time, not really knowing what to expect. Off we went leaving the comfort of the tar road to the untested waters of the red clay and into the forest proper. Trees, a neat little stream with the cascading water effect, insect noises, birds chirping, and we were in the forest proper, albeit on a 2-3 metre wide track.

There were a whole bunch of people there, runners and joggers (heaven forbid we mix the two up!), really old respectable folk with their cranes and crutches
Mini waterfall!
, loud Japanese walkers, few cyclists in skin tights that they love so much together with the obligatory multicoloured shades, kids and ..monkeys!

Yup, a whole herd (im sure we do not refer to monkeys as a herd) but a whole bunch of them were crossing the trail at one time, like a herd, those little brown monkeys that we hope would not be dangerous and suddenly turn on you even though they might be looking harmless, with some of them even having tiny baby monkeys clinging on to the mother monkey's belly. Man, what a crowd! Deeper and higher up the trail, there were even monkeys swinging from tree top to tree top, like your regular National Geographic live.

Going up!

Halfway up we came to the entrance to a canopy walkway, clearly stating that a ticket is to be purchased first, which is available from the counter. What counter? I guess there must have been  one at the beginning of the trail. There were a few buildings around near the start of the trail, offices and a cafe we could see from a distance.

Sloping down

It was  a distraction to the climb i guess as the Hikers trail took up along a path that climbed up, not too steeply (there were dudes with powerful looking legs on their mountain bikes peddling away) and just as were we about to think that the trail would never end, it finally did, as all things eventually do, and we came to a clearing, with the tar road once again, all along neatly kept fields of trees with their names labelled to their barks. And not long before brisk walking back to our car.

End of the hike.
It was a good experience, although I did run a little here, it was more of a exploratory visit this time, and perhaps later on we might visit here again.. Who knows , the hilly trail would be a good place to build on the much needed stamina right? Right. If anything it was a welcome a break from the monotonous run around my taman. No monkeys there. :D

As usual, the next day , sore calves and thighs dominated our complaints, probably due to the often insufficient stretching.

All in all, it was a fun trip, not a weekly thing, but a fun pleasant back to nature experience!

2009 Borneo International Marathon (BIM)

A good two years ago!

That was my last major run , when I was working in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Sabah, and haven't been doing any serious running since. Had trained for the marathon 3 short months mainly in the lovely Taman Tun (near Hosp Mesra KK) , which to me is the ideal training ground. Fresh crisp air, its like running through a well maintained jungle, with its slopes for speed drills and the winding-never-the-same-view coming at you. To complete its hilly 3 km (the course has distance markers) is like doing a 5 km run, drenched in sweat by the end of it. Do 10 rounds and a marathon will be child's play!
Ah yes, kinda miss the spot now that I'm in KL. Still hunting around for another place like it.

Parents waiting before the run.. Excitement!
Anyway, the 2009 BIM was a success by any measure I would say, though it started a little bit later than was initially planned. We arrived way earlier and had time to do some chatting up in the well lit stadium. Myself and my ever active parents (who flew down specially for the event) found it to be well organised, water stations were abundant, and the banana station was a welcome sight (lovely bananas from Sabah).

As I had to work the day before, and wake up really early, my eyes begin to swell shut with all the water for hydration and the lack of sleep, compounded by the fact of my eye bags. Speak about not being fodder for the camera. Ah well, the glory of the run right?

My parents went for the 10 km run, and later told me it was a relaxing care free run by the sea. Yes, the course went from the Likas stadium along the scenic waterfront of the Likas bay, to the Longest Mall in Borneo, the One Borneo (or 1B as the locals like to call it), and then back again to the quaint old town of Kota Kinabalu, detouring into the lush surroundings of the Sutera Harbour Hotel, to the 'beachy' Tanjung Aru and then back again to Stadium Likas. What a route!
Parents completed 10K. No sweat!

I need sleep!
Since Sabah gets its sun to rise much sooner than west Malaysia, it was already bright and rosy when we started the early morning run. Everyone seem to start out strong, or at least the crowd that I was in, even the little boys and girls, and I got caught up with the crowd and was also running way faster than my usual pace until I finally and thankfully not too far off, got my senses in check, and slowed my pace. Almost made that classical mistake marathon 101 there! And before you knew it, the heat came up, thanks in part to the ocean just beside you. No wall was hit here thankfully. Managed to finish under 5 hours.

The milo van at the post run was a delight! Memories from Hari Sukan during primary and secondary schools came back! Thanks Milo! Met a few friends too, never knew you guys are fellow runners! After much stretching and the completion medal it was off to home for the much needed rest. The night was sheer torture to the legs, and throughout the next 1 month, had a creak to the right knee. Wrong technique of running? Thank God it is all ok now, had this fear that I had to give up running for good.
That would have been bad.
Good run!

Welcome, welcome! :D

Hellooo to the big fat world of the internet!
Thank you for your time and interest! :D
I love running (not away of course!) and run and run did I once. Never had a day without it. Then came career, life, and the like, when just so suddenly I realised that Im not that fit anymore and have become.... even FATter.
Heres to a blog which will see me (and you!) in a journey of rediscovery,of the simple joy of running just for the sake of the run, of long lost flat tummies, and who knows, a pack or two might be hiding underneath.
Lets go!
:D
